“The album title ‘And the Dead Tree Gives No Shelter’ is taken from T. S. Eliot’s epic poem The Waste Land. For this album, the dead tree works as a metaphor for ways of living that drain the world of meaning and offer no real way of navigating the hardships of life.
I took that from their explanation of the album. This is my official listen to the band, and I am absolutely unsure how they’ve escaped me. The music for the album is 100% what I love. This almost avante-garde progression with meaningful lyrics. It pulls you in.
Lyrically this is a beautiful album. I’d go as far as to say it’s profound. There’s a beautiful haunting message given. Each track a journey. They absolutely feel desolate but with a silver lining.
Musically, it’s a brilliant album. One that’s easy to get lost in. I want to say it’s almost droning, but that’s not the right word. It’s a pulling, a begging, a plea to be heard. A stunning soundscape that if you allow yourself to open, it may bring you to tears.
Tree of Life is the middle track for this album, and the last half of the song absolutely did make me cry. There’s this heartbeat to the song that pulls the emotions out of you. It’s a rawness that I feel more music needs.
This is the kind of music; the kind of album that makes bands stand out. Makes them great. It’s almost like being in the room with the Divine.
I won’t forget this one any time soon.
