Colombian Speed Metal Trio Louder has unleashed their debut album, “Devil's Night”, courtesy of Fighter Records. The band hasn't been together for very long, releasing only a demo last year before following up with a full-length debut this year. That's impressive momentum for a young band, and it speaks volumes about the quality of music they're bringing to the table.

The band cites Razor, Living Death, and Blood Money as influences, but I'm hearing a healthy dose of Venom as well, especially in the vocal department. There's also a strong early Motörhead vibe running throughout the album, which makes perfect sense considering Lemmy and company helped lay the groundwork for the entire genre.

One thing is certain: these guys love Speed Metal, and so do I. The quickest way to kidnap me is to tell me there's a Speed Metal record in the van. I'll hop right in and ask questions later.

For all the things “Devil's Night” gets right, there's one glaring omission: guitar leads. They're few and far between, and the ones that do appear aren't particularly memorable. When we're talking about Speed Metal, I want my ears scorched by blazing solos and sky-high lead work. That's part of the genre's DNA, and it's the one ingredient missing here.

The good news is that Louder already has everything else in place. The riffs are sharp, the songwriting is strong, and the arrangements show a band that understands exactly what makes Speed Metal tick. Adding a dedicated lead guitarist could elevate this material to another level. I don't know the circumstances behind the recording, so I won't speculate on why they remained a three-piece, but if the band's trajectory continues upward, and I suspect it will, they shouldn't have much trouble finding another player to flesh out the lineup.

As it stands, “Devil's Night” feels a little incomplete. It's by no means a bad album; in fact, there's a lot to like here. But when I'm spinning Speed Metal, I'm looking for those scorched-earth lead breaks that make the genre so addictive, and that's the one thing Louder leaves me wanting more of.
