The longer I live, the more music continues to surprise me. Today's surprise comes courtesy of Cleveland's Ironflame. Somehow, the band has reached its sixth full-length album, “Worlds To Conquer”, without ever crossing my path. That's wild enough on its own, but what really threw me was discovering that the man behind Ironflame is Andrew D'Cagna, bassist and vocalist for the outstanding Doom/Occult outfit Brimstone Coven. Now I feel a little guilty.
I've considered myself a huge Brimstone Coven fan for years, yet I somehow missed the existence of Ironflame altogether. Then again, Brimstone is one of those bands I get completely lost in. I throw on the records, disappear into them, and never think much beyond the music itself. Apparently, I should've been paying a little more attention. If you're expecting Doom because of the Brimstone connection, forget it.
“Worlds To Conquer” plants its flag firmly in the world of Epic Heavy Metal, with one boot in classic U.S. Power Metal and the other stomping across European Heavy Metal territory. It's a glorious collision of styles that pays tribute to the legends without ever feeling like a tribute act. The spirit of Ronnie James Dio is all over this record.
Not in a copycat sort of way, but in the way these songs are written. They carry that same sense of grandeur, triumph, and larger-than-life melody that made Dio's work so unforgettable. Once you hear it, there's no unhearing it.
One detail from the press sheet genuinely caught me off guard. Outside of the lead guitar solos, which were handled by Ironflame's live guitarists, Andrew D'Cagna wrote and recorded everything himself. Normally, when one person takes on that much responsibility, something ends up suffering. Maybe the drums feel programmed, the bass gets buried, or the songwriting starts chasing one instrument at the expense of everything else. None of that happens here.
The album is remarkably cohesive from beginning to end. It never sounds like a one-man project, and it certainly doesn't sound assembled by a computer. It's organic, passionate, and absolutely soaked in decades of Heavy Metal DNA. You don't fake this kind of instinct. You earn it by living the music.
The influences are easy enough to spot if you've spent your life wearing denim and leather. I hear flashes of Helloween, HammerFall, Iron Maiden, and, of course, Dio. The riffs are ridiculously catchy, the solos would make Dave Murray and Adrian Smith smile, and D'Cagna's vocal performance completely exceeded my expectations. The guy is a far more complete musician than I ever realized. I'll be honest, I figured this would be another promo I'd spin a few times, write about, and move on. That never happened.
“Worlds To Conquer” has been living rent-free in my stereo since it arrived. Every time I think I've heard enough, I end up reaching for it again. It taps into the same part of me that spent the '80s hunting down Heavy Metal records and dreaming about the next great band.
If you're a lifelong Heavy Metal fan with a soft spot for U.S. Power Metal, European Heavy Metal, and soaring melodies backed by fist-pumping riffs, Ironflame's “Worlds To Conquer” isn't just another album to check out. It's one you need to own.
