Demon Spell Blessed Be The Dark Review

Italy’s Demon Spell have unleashed their debut full-length “Blessed Be The Dark”, and I’m not here to undersell it, it’s a full-blown rocker. Not just in sound, but in how it moves. This thing doesn’t walk; it struts in with a cloak full of bats and knocks over your furniture on the way in. Released via Dying Victims Productions, you already know this isn’t some sterile, algorithm-chasing snoozefest. This is Metal with dirt under its nails and something sinister in its bloodstream.
What we’re dealing with here is straight-up old-school Occult Heavy Metal, firmly planted in the shadow of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, with a healthy dose of Pentagram-style Doom creeping through the floorboards. It’s a killer balance. One second, you’re throwing fists at the ceiling, the next you’re locked into a slow, hypnotic headbang like you’ve just signed a blood pact you don’t remember agreeing to.
The production leans hard into that analog warmth - grimy, alive, and completely uninterested in modern polish. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about feeling. Demon Spell sounds like they crawled out of a crypt where the year is permanently 1983, and honestly, I’m not mad about it. That’s where this kind of Metal belongs. As someone who’s been around long enough to remember when this style wasn’t a “throwback” but just how things were done, this hits like coming home… if home happens to be lit by candles and possibly cursed.
But let’s be real, the vocals are the hook that sinks in deep. Those King Diamond-style falsettos soar, shriek, and haunt the hell out of everything, instantly grabbing your attention and refusing to let go. There are also flashes of Warrel Dane (Sanctuary/Nevermore) in there, adding a bit of dramatic weight to the madness. It’s theatrical without being cheesy, commanding without feeling forced. The moment it clicked, I cranked the volume and let it consume me like a willing sacrifice.
And the best part of it all? There’s no dead weight. No filler. No “skip this one” moments. It’s 35 minutes of relentlessly catchy, Occult-soaked Heavy Metal that just keeps feeding you riffs like some kind of demonic buffet. By the time it’s over, you’re already reaching to hit play again, or hunting down their earlier EP like a possessed record collector with a mission.
“Blessed Be The Dark” isn’t just a strong debut, it’s a statement. Demon Spell knows exactly what they’re doing, and they’re doing it with conviction, style, and just the right amount of unholy swagger. Ignore this at your own peril.
Standouts – “As Lucifer Smiles”, “Curse Of The Undead”, “High On Sacrifice” and title track “Blessed Be The Dark”.
