In March, Ripple Music released “Space To Dive” from Serbian Stoner/Desert Rockers, Stonus. I hadn’t heard of the band before -unfortunate, or maybe just a delayed discovery. Not long after the album landed in my queue, I had to undergo another much-needed ear surgery, so fuzzy Desert Rock wasn’t exactly in the cards. As the days passed and I healed, I was finally able to dig back into the backlog of albums that deserved attention.
So here we are, several weeks late, but I’m back in the ring and ready to get rough and tumble with some seriously dank Stoner Rock from across the globe. And that’s exactly what Stonus deliver: big fuzz, big riffs, and a hefty, no-nonsense dose of atmospheric Desert Rock.
While “Space To Dive” weaves quieter moments into its fabric, it just as often erupts with massive, out-of-nowhere riffs that land like a bomb, giving the album real firepower. Vocally, there’s a clear nod to Monster Magnet - the smooth delivery and melodic phrasing carry a definite Dave Wyndorf vibe. The pacing is another strong point. It’s a bit understated in that regard, but effective - the songs don’t overstay their welcome, which can sometimes be an issue in the Stoner scene. Outside of a couple of longer tracks, most hover around the four-minute mark, keeping things tight and making the riffs hit even harder.
Production-wise, it’s going to be tough to find something sharper. The album was recorded at Wreck It Sound Studios with Johnny S.A. (former 1000mods) and mastered by legendary engineer Howie Weinberg, whose résumé includes Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Metallica. From the jump, “Space To Dive” feels built to move bodies - whether that means banging heads or shaking hips. It’s a must listen!
Standouts – “Hope Dose”, “Tangerine”, “Berlin” and “Psychactive Baby”.
