Swedish Heavy Metal Band Dead Kosmonaut are gearing up to release their third effort, “Retrospectre,” courtesy of Edged Circle Productions. Sadly, this is another traditional Metal act that completely slipped past my radar. The band features members from several notable acts including Hellbutcher, Sorcerer, and Unleashed, so there’s already a strong pedigree behind the project before the first note even hits.

At its core, Dead Kosmonaut is a Traditional Heavy Metal band, but there are healthy doses of Doom and Power Metal woven throughout the album’s DNA. The vocals land somewhere between Iron Maiden and Dream Evil, complete with soaring falsettos that absolutely seal the deal for me. Musically, the album leans heavily into mid-tempo territory - this isn’t “run to the hills” energy so much as standing triumphantly atop a mountain, staring down at the chaos below while the rest of the world crawls around in confusion. It’s moody and imposing, yet oddly uplifting in the way only truly confident Heavy Metal can be.

What really stands out is the musicianship. Every performance feels deliberate and seasoned, like you’re listening to players who fully understand restraint, atmosphere, and pacing. Some of the tracks do stretch a little longer than necessary, but the immersive mood and strong sense of melody keep things engaging throughout. Rather than feeling self-indulgent, the longer runtimes allow the songs to breathe and build their towering atmosphere naturally.

“Retrospectre” feels like one of those albums you discover almost by accident - maybe you buy it because the cover art catches your eye, or because the band name sounds cool, or maybe a song title sparks your curiosity. Then suddenly, months later, it’s become one of the most reliable and rewarding albums in your collection.

Standouts – “The Battle Is Over”, “Wake Of Aquarius”, and “View From The Future”.
