Australian Heavy Blues/Stoner Rock trio Child have returned with their long-awaited sophomore album, “Rebirth”, marking their debut for Heavy Psych Sounds.
It's hard not to compare “Rebirth” to the band's excellent debut, “Soul Murder”, but one thing becomes obvious almost immediately, this record hits harder. It's heavier, grittier, and a little more abrasive around the edges without sacrificing the band's identity. This is still unmistakably Child; they've just turned the amps up another notch.
“Rebirth” is everything Heavy Blues and Stoner Rock albums constantly promise but rarely deliver. This is the sound I hear in my head when someone mentions the genre. It captures that timeless, Blues-soaked swagger forged by Led Zeppelin and the great Hard Rock bands of the '70s, all of whom owed a debt to the Blues pioneers before them. Child doesn't simply borrow from those influences, they channel them into something that feels both familiar and fresh.
There's no wasted motion here. Every riff, every groove, and every transition serve a purpose. The album moves with confidence, pulling you in one minute and kicking you square in the teeth the next. It's the kind of record that demands volume and practically dares you to sit still.
As much as I love the heavier material, my favorite moments arrive when Child eases off the throttle and dives deeper into its Blues roots. Those slower-burning tracks are where the band's chemistry truly shines. The massive riffs carry even more weight, the melodies breathe, and the vocals command the spotlight with effortless confidence. It's in those moments where Heavy Blues and Stoner Rock become one seamless beast.
The production is exactly what you'd hope for - warm, organic, and gloriously vintage. Nothing feels overproduced or sterilized. As a trio, each musician has room to breathe, allowing every instrument to make its presence felt without being buried beneath unnecessary layers. It's an honest, powerful recording from beginning to end.
I don't throw praise around lightly, but “Rebirth” is one of the strongest Heavy Blues/Stoner Rock albums I've heard in years. Very few records in the genre can stand shoulder to shoulder with it. Simply put, this is how it's done. If you're searching for an album that'll still be spinning years from now, Child has delivered exactly that. “Rebirth” is available now, and it deserves a place in your collection.
