I’m not the biggest fan of Power Metal, but every now and then a band comes along that completely pulls me in for one reason or another. German Power Metal outfit Torian recently released their fifth album, “The Lost Legion Rising”, through Massacre Records, and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to dig into it for review.

Admittedly, I wasn’t familiar with the band beforehand, but that seems to be the norm. No matter how much music I listen to, it’s impossible to hear every band out there. That can be frustrating, but it also makes discoveries like this much sweeter when you stumble across something you genuinely enjoy.

Torian’s formula is tried and true, but they inject a healthy dose of aggression and Thrash-inspired riffing that sets them apart from the average Power Metal act. Sure, I’ve heard elements of this style before from other bands, but that doesn’t make it any less effective. In fact, it feels like a fresh shot of energy into a genre that can sometimes become overly predictable. One thing is certain: this band knows how to write melodies and huge hooks regardless of how fast or epic the moment becomes, and that serves the songwriting exceptionally well.

Vocally, we’re dealing with a falsetto approach that also carries some grit and abrasiveness in spots. It isn’t the polished, pristine Power Metal vocal style we’ve become accustomed to, and that actually works in the band’s favor. It adds character and ends up being far more enjoyable than you might expect. Musically, the band lets the guitar riffs and leads do much of the heavy lifting, which is exactly how I prefer it. Let the riffs take us on a journey through time and space. While there’s orchestration present, it never overwhelms the music or pushes things into full-blown fantasy soundtrack territory with dragons flying overhead.

The production here is top-notch, which is exactly what you’d expect from a seasoned Power Metal band. While I haven’t heard Torian’s previous material, I’d be surprised if it weren’t just as strong, especially if they’re delivering work of this caliber on album number five. I’ve clearly got some catching up to do, and if you haven’t heard this band before, you probably do too. Start with “The Lost Legion Rising”.

Standouts – “Sons Of The Damned”, “Soul Vampires”, “Warpriest”, “Sent To Hell” and “Lost Legion”.
