The Los Angeles-based Prog/Power Metallers Novareign have finally returned with the follow-up to their 2018 debut, “Legend”. From what I understand, the delay came down to members honoring commitments with their other bands while also locking in a permanent lineup. I'm sure waiting eight years wasn't part of the plan, but here we are.

The new album, “Shifting The Axis Of The World”, is going to feel like home for fans of Prog and Power Metal. These guys put on a clinic in technical musicianship without forgetting to write memorable songs. Towering vocal melodies, blistering guitar leads, and razor-sharp performances are layered throughout the record. At times I'm reminded of early Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Brainstorm, which is pretty solid company to keep. This isn't usually the style I reach for first, but when it's done this well, it's hard not to appreciate it. The average musician couldn't hold these guys' jock straps.

As impressive as the performances are, the production and arrangements deserve just as much credit. Everything is thoughtfully constructed, balancing melody with jaw-dropping musicianship without disappearing into endless noodling. If you're part of the Power Metal crowd or you're the type that never misses a Prog-Power festival, this is one album you don't want to overlook.

Standouts – “Ironsides”, “Thunder And Majesty” and title track “Shifting The Axis Of The World”.
