Belgium’s long-time Heavy Metal lifers, Killer, is back with another heaping helping of smoldering Metal! “The Grand Finale” is the title of the latest release and this time out, the band is working with High Roller Records. Those of you familiar with the band will be right at home, those who aren’t get ready to have your ass handed to you!
In reading the press that came along with the album it reads that this album is dedicated to one of the band’s long-time heroes – Lemmy Kilmister. I can certainly hear that – it’s ferocious, a little rough around the edges, has an oldschool edge, but there’s an incredible amount of heart in every track here. That pairs perfectly with it being dedicated to Lord Kilmister.
I’m not sure if I’ve always paid attention to the lyrical content of a Killer album, but this time out, I can’t help but notice. I feel the lyrics this time – they cover the whole map of human emotions and some of them aren’t exactly what you’d find in Metal. They feel reflective, heartfelt and I’m here for that – I’m old enough to know better but I’ve been too stupid to care in the past. I feel a kinship with the lyrics deeply this time out.
Given that the band is a 3-piece, they raise more than enough hell to make it sound like there’s an army of Rock Warriors in the studio with them. The riffs, leads and so on are all top tier, but Shorty’s vocals are damned fine too. He’s always been a hit or miss with me sometimes, but here, he’s spot on. This will no doubt please the fanbase, I know I’m pleased out of my mind.
Lloyd the singer of the Motorhead tribute band – Motorheadz guests on the track “Roll The Dice”. It’s a tribute of the highest to Lord Lemmy and nobody is disappointed. The track “The Grand Finale” is the best of the bunch to me – the lyrics, the arrangement and movement hit me straight in the heart and even though it’s blisteringly fast, I get a little misty in the eyes too. If you’ve been around as I have, moments like this are few and far but when they land, they really land. Speaking of misty eyes and fading smiles, “Gone Too Soon” is a pseudo ballad that feels like I could’ve written it for my brother – losing someone you love so deeply cuts to the bone and there’s nothing that could fill the void left behind. This track perfectly explains that and the band’s playing, specifically Shorty’s vocals and lead breaks in the track are brilliant!
“The Grand Finale” is a spectacular return for Killer, I didn’t see it coming and I didn’t expect that I’d like it as much as I do, but I do. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a legitimate Heavy Metal album that we needed in 2026! It’ll get the works – vinyl, cd and so on, don’t miss out. I’ll be getting this one on vinyl no doubt, I suggest you do the same, it’s a rite of passage!
