Arise From Worms is the brainchild of guitarist Sonny Lombardozzi. He’s joined with a powerhouse of musical talent. Steve Tucker (Morbid Angel) on vocals, Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) on drums and Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Malmsteen, Kiss) on keys.

 

This is my first listen of the band and I’m at a loss on how to properly explain the band. I’m generally pretty wordy, so being at a loss is..so not like me. Okay, so maybe grab a drink and a snack while I try to explain this band to you.

 

So, it is very heavy. It is also very technical. It is also theatrical. It is also progressive. What are time signatures? They don’t exist within the music. Dual singing guitars? Yep, that’s there. Symphonic keys? They got that too. Progressive polyrhythmic drums? That’s a check. Death metal growls? Yep! It is there too. It’s a cacophony of sounds that somehow work. There’s staccato and starts and stops, but there’s this allure where you just have to listen. How do you pick a standout track on an album like this? I feel as if you can’t because each song is so different. Genuinely they all stand out. Yes, there’s a flow throughout the album, but there’s also individuality to it too.

 

I will say that this may not be for everyone, but I would say everyone should at least give them a try.
